"Kalpavanam" refers to a "Wish-fulfilling Forest".
The concept of the “Tree of life” or the “Wish-Fulfilling Tree” exists in many cultures across the world. In Indic cultures, the words used are "kalpataru" or "kalpavriksha" or "kalpadruma".
As per the Hindu mythology the Kalpavriksha emerged from the "Kshira Sagara" during "Samudra Manthan" or churning of the ocean of milk. It is said that there are 5 kalpavrikshas - Mandana, Parijata, Santana, Kalpavrikhsa & Harichandana; each of them meant to fulfill different wishes.
As per the Jain Cosmology, there are 10 Kalpavrikshas which grant ten distinct wishes such as an abode to reside, garments, utensils, nourishment including fruits and sweets, pleasant music, ornaments, fragrant flowers, shining lamps and a radiant light at night. There are similar references in Buddhism and Sikhism as well.
Many tree-species; like Indian Coral Tree or Parijata (Erythrina variegata), Coconut Tree (Cocos Nucifera), Indian Banyan Tree (Ficus benghalensis), Acacia, Mahua Tree (Madhuca longifolia), Banni/Vanni Tree (Prosopis cineraria), Indian Butter Tree (Diploknema butyracea), and Mulberry Tree (Morus nigra tree); have been referred to as Kalpavrikshas.
On the occasion of her 76th Birthday, we dedicated this farm to our mother "Kalpa". Besides bearing her name, we hope this farm will also mirror her many attributes - loving, caring, nurturing, inspiring, protecting, motivating, aspiring and encouraging - that have enriched our lives so far.
A Tribute to my Paati - By Janvi Iyer
My Paati mirrors the elements of nature.
We hope that our farm in her name,
Will do just the same.
She is like the sun,
That gives us energy, especially for the plants to grow.
She is like the moon,
That watches over us, even as we rest.
She is like the stars,
That guide us, like lighting up a traveler's path.
She is like the rock,
That stands firm, and won’t ever change.
She is like the air,
That is pure, and we cannot live without.
She is like the plants and trees,
That feed and nourish us all.
She is like water,
That is crystal clear and keeps us healthy.
Love you Paati!
